How To Reduce Neck Pain

Chronic neck pain may be the result of whiplash, nerve damage, muscular strain or arthritis. These problems can be exacerbated by poor ergonomics, faulty biomechanics and emotional stress. While medical treatment is needed for an injury, there are a number of things that can be done to reduce neck pain without medical intervention.

If performed properly, a well-designed corrective exercise program can reduce neck pain. The program should be presented in such a way that the intrinsic logic of both the exercises and the exercise sequences is apparent, even to people without a medical or exercise science background. A clear understanding of the program's goals should be evident.

To reduce neck pain, the corrective exercise program should train the hypertonic, or over working muscles to relax, and the hypotonic, or under working muscles to become more active. Neck pain is often the result of a trapezius muscle that works too hard. The trapezius forms a triangle from the neck to the shoulder blades. When you hold your head in a biomechanically incorrect position, or if you sleep on a pillow that does not properly support your neck, the upper part of your trapezius is put into a position of constant contraction. This can also happen if you perform weight training exercises either in poor form, or if you use too much weight.
