Posture Exercises

Nowadays, there are many exercise techniques that can be used to improve posture. Gurus and practitioners of Pilates, Yoga, Tai Chi and a multitude of other disciplines are quick to claim that the practice of their technique holds the secrets to postural perfection. While all of these practices are excellent forms of exercise, their postural benefits are not achieved automatically. Indeed, many people enter into these programs with severe misalignments and muscular imbalances. This makes it almost impossible to perform the exercises correctly. The participant may get a "good workout," but the postural improvement benefits are limited.

In order for a posture exercise program to be effective, the exercises need to have a very specific focus on the postural problems the exercises are designed to correct. The participant needs to have an image in his or her mind of the goal of the exercise. Additionally, the exercises need to be sequenced in a logical order that will efficiently promote muscular balance.

This logical sequence of exercises should be composed of movements designed to work both the extrinsic larger muscle groups as well as the intrinsic smaller groups. Many techniques fail on this account. The larger muscles are often worked, but the smaller muscles are ignored.

The posture exercise program from BetterPosture.com incorporates both external and internal muscle work. A particular focus is placed on the rotator cuff, a muscle group often ignored in other programs. Weak rotator cuffs not only cause poor posture, they can lead to injury. Even Charles Poliquin, the famous body builder suggests rotator cuff exercises for body builders who want to enhance their upper back definition.
